Creating a vegetable garden at home is an easy task if one takes appropriate care about vegetable plants during each stage of development.

Here are certain tips to help you grow vegetables in a garden:

1. Seedlings are commonly infected by pests like cutworms. Young larvae of cutworms are called moth caterpillars. These caterpillars primarily feed on leaves and tender stem bases of young seedlings causing a significant damage. You can use cardboard centers of tissue paper rolls to prevent the attack. The cardboards should be kept submerged in the soil around the seedling.

2. Care must be taken while transferring seedlings from peat pots to large containers. Peat pots can be problematic even they are transferred along with the seedling. These problems can be avoided by tearing away the top and bottom of a peat pot before planting. Seedlings with stable stem structure should be planted deeper so as to provide extra support.

3. Plants like beans, cucumber, gourds, melons and squash are creepers. They should be supported by making them climb over a trellis or arbor. You can also construct a tepee using 6-foot high poles that are tied at the top. The tepee can be covered using bean or pea vines. The poles can be used to support creepers.

4. Crops like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants need to side-dressed with nutrients so as to facilitate continuous production.

5. Another common problem in vegetable gardens is the growth of weeds. This can be prevented by placing newspapers covered with straws between garden rows.

6. Compost should be used while planting water melons and cucumbers.
